  James Byatt

A geography graduate from Durham University, James went on to study for a postgraduate masters degree in Landscape Design at Newcastle University. His drawings are based on Ordnance Survey plans and represent details of an estate or garden as an historical record. They are undertaken by commission and can include an area of up to 60 hectares.

The drawings are produced in a four-stage process:

Stage 1: A pencil sketch is made on an OS base plan with individual trees and shrubs drawn and annotated together with interesting landscape features. The level of detail is dependent on the size of the area being drawn.

Stage 1 - pencil

Stage 2: A black ink copy is made by overlaying the pencil sketch with tracing paper and ink drawings are added of the house and interesting features or views and where applicable a family crest. Title, scale, north point and legend are also added.

Stage 2 - ink

Stage 3: The black ink tracing is photocopied onto plain paper and coloured using Tria rendering pens. Colouring indicates different terrain such as mown and long grass, herbaceous borders and tree canopy. Copper coloured trees and shrubs and water features are coloured accordingly.

Stage 3 - coloured ink

Stage 4: The final stage. The coloured drawing is scanned and printed using UV resistant inks to enable longevity of display in daylight. The size of the finished product is A0 (841 x 1189mm) and may be reduced to a suitable size for framing.

A site visit is arranged with interested clients to discuss the boundaries of a drawing and features of interest that could be sketched and included. A written quote is then provided for the work based on an hourly rate and expenses. If a quote is accepted a deposit of 20% is required prior to commencing work. Based in Moray, James accepts commissions UK wide.
